You might as well like them.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This is product recommendations in action.<\/p>\n<p>And by the way, Amazon has long mastered the art of personalized product recommendations. As a matter of fact, product recommendations account for <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/industries\/retail\/our-insights\/how-retailers-can-keep-up-with-consumers\">35% of the eCommerce giant\u2019s sales<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s another mind-boggling statistic: Netflix makes 75% of its sales from recommending movies and shows to its customers.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s grand!<\/p>\n<p>Apparently, if you haven\u2019t taken product recommendations seriously yet, you are leaving a lot of money on the table.<\/p>\n<p>Personalized product recommendations don&#8217;t end at \u201cwhat a customer might like\u201d and \u201cwhat other customers viewed\u201d, like in the Amazon\u2019s example you just saw.<\/p>\n<p>You can make recommendations to customers based on:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Best selling products<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frequently bought together (complementary products)<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trending products<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Featured products<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most viewed products<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Shortly, we will be discussing, in detail, the different approaches to product recommendations.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_Do_Product_Recommendation_Engines_Work\"><\/span>How Do Product Recommendation Engines Work?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Product recommendations engines are a set of algorithms that personalize your customers\u2019 shopping experience by showing them products they will most likely be interested in.<\/p>\n<p>They do this by checking an individual customer\u2019s search queries, geographic location, products viewed, shopping history, and a host of others.<\/p>\n<p>With this data, they will sort through your catalog to find the product that will match the customer\u2019s preference most closely.<\/p>\n<p>When a matching product is found, it would be presented to a customer directly on the website or via emails.<\/p>\n<p>Recommendations engines are what make upselling and cross-selling possible. There are many other benefits they offer, but we will get to them in the later section of this post.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"types\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Types_of_Product_Recommendations_Filtering\"><\/span>Types of Product Recommendations Filtering<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>To add layers of personalization to a customers shopping experience, recommendation algorithms often take 3 approaches:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Collaborative filtering<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Content-based filtering<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hybrid filtering<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Collaborative_Filtering\"><\/span>Collaborative Filtering<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Visitors coming to your website can be segmented into two categories: first time and returning visitors.<\/p>\n<p>Now, for the former, you can\u2019t exactly tell what they might like. This is because they have no purchase history or preference data you can lay hold on to personalize their shopping experience.<\/p>\n<p>As such, the best course of action is to go broad.<\/p>\n<p>The algorithm engine could start by recommending a best-selling or trending products to a first-time visitor.<\/p>\n<p>Then as the user interacts with your website by viewing available products, the algorithm engine begins to form a preference profile for such a user. Based on this profile, recommendations are made based on similar choices of other customers.<\/p>\n<p>For example, let\u2019s say a user viewed a particular laptop in your store.
