How to run post-purchase upsells
The best moment for one more item is right after a shopper says yes. Here is how to make that offer feel like a favor, not a hurdle.
The playbook.
Offer something that completes the order
Target offers by the product, tag or collection that was just bought. A refill, a matching item or an accessory reads as help.
Make it one click
Post-purchase offers add to the order without a new checkout or re-entering card details. Keep the page short: one product, one price, one button.
Give a real reason to say yes now
A discount or free shipping on the added item, with a short timer, works because the offer only exists on this page.
Use the thank-you page too
Shoppers who skip the first offer still see the thank-you page. Put a second, lighter offer there.
Read the funnel
Track click-through, conversion and recommendation performance, and swap offers that do not convert.
