Black Friday 2026 on Shopify: The Cart Setup to Finish Before November 20
A BFCM 2026 cart checklist for Shopify: rewards thresholds, one gift tier, bundles on hero products, one upsell rule, express checkout, discount combination tests and a freeze date.
Short answer: Black Friday is Friday, November 27, 2026 (Cyber Monday is November 30). Finish your cart setup by November 20. That means a rewards bar with a BFCM threshold, one gift tier, a bundle or quantity break on your top products, one in-cart upsell rule and express checkout buttons. Then test every discount combination with a real cart, and change nothing in the cart until December 1.
Most BFCM checklists are about email calendars and ad budgets. Those matter, but the cart is where order size gets decided. It's the last screen before checkout, and most of your BFCM shoppers will see it on a phone. This is the cart part of the plan.
The 2026 dates
| Date | What happens | Cart status |
|---|---|---|
| Mon 2 – Fri 13 Nov | Build and test | Changes allowed |
| Mon 16 – Fri 20 Nov | Run it with real traffic, fix what breaks | Small fixes only |
| Fri 20 Nov | Cart freeze | No new apps, no theme changes |
| Thu 26 Nov | Thanksgiving (US), early-access sales | Monitor |
| Fri 27 Nov | Black Friday | Monitor |
| Mon 30 Nov | Cyber Monday | Monitor |
| Tue 1 Dec | Turn BFCM offers off, review | Changes allowed |
The freeze matters more than any single tactic. A cart app installed on Black Friday morning, or a theme update pushed on Thursday night, is how stores lose their best day.
1. Reset the free-shipping threshold to BFCM prices
Your normal threshold was set against full-price orders. At 20–30% off, the same baskets are worth less, so a $60 threshold can suddenly be two items away instead of one.
- Recalculate your median order value at sale prices (for example, take last year's BFCM orders, or apply your planned discount to a normal week of orders).
- Set the BFCM threshold about one typical item above that median.
- Show it in the cart as a progress bar. "$9 away from free shipping" gets shoppers to add one more item.
Before you lock it in, check the margin: the free shipping you pay for on an order at the new threshold should still leave a profit after the BFCM discount.
2. Add one gift tier above it
One reward tier above free shipping is enough for BFCM. A free gift at a spend threshold gives bigger baskets a reason to grow without deepening the discount on every order. Pick something cheap to you, useful to the customer, and in stock in the quantity you expect to need.
In Adoric Cart, you add the free-shipping and gift tiers to Rewards, and the gift is added to the cart automatically when the cart meets the rules. Whatever tool you use, make the gift a real product with inventory tracking and set a stock alert. Watch the gift's stock during the weekend: if the gift runs out, take the gift tier off the bar straight away. Space the tiers so the gift tier sits clearly above free shipping, roughly one more item away, so each step feels reachable.
3. Put a bundle or quantity break on your hero products
During BFCM, a handful of products usually take most of the traffic. Make those products' pages and the cart do more:
- Quantity breaks ("Buy 2, save 10%. Buy 3, save 15%") on products people buy more than one of: consumables, gifts, basics.
- Fixed bundles or kits for gift buyers ("the starter set").
- A gift-ready bundle for the weeks after BFCM, if you sell into the holidays.
Adoric Bundles Quantity Breaks handles quantity breaks, fixed and mix-and-match bundles and free gifts, online and on Shopify POS if you also sell in store. If you only need simple volume pricing, check Shopify's built-in options first. An app makes more sense when you want bundles, mix-and-match or gifts alongside the price breaks.
4. Set one in-cart upsell rule, not five
The cart drawer can show a recommendation under the line items. For BFCM, set one rule and make it simple:
- Offer a low-priced add-on, well under the cart's value (a refill, a case, a gift wrap, a second color).
- Don't show discounted hero products as upsells. They're already in the sale, and you'll just move the shopper's attention away from checkout.
- Hide the upsell once it's in the cart.
Too many offers in the cart slow the shopper down at the exact moment you want them to check out. Save bigger or second offers for after the purchase, when they can't get in the way of checkout.
5. Show express checkout in the cart
Returning BFCM shoppers often already have Shop Pay, Apple Pay or PayPal saved. Show those buttons in the cart drawer so they can skip the form. Check them on iOS Safari and Android Chrome, logged in and logged out.
Test your discount combinations (the step most stores skip)
This is where BFCM promotions break. Shopify only combines discounts when each discount is set to combine with the other's class (product, order, shipping). Here's what Shopify's rules mean for BFCM:
- Customers can use up to 5 product or order discount codes and 1 shipping code per order. The store can have 25 active automatic discounts, including app-created discounts.
- Product discounts apply first, then order discounts on the reduced subtotal, then shipping.
- If two discounts can't combine, Shopify applies the better one for the customer. Your "free shipping + 20% off" can quietly turn into just "20% off".
- On most plans, products in a Buy X Get Y discount can't receive another product discount. Stacking two product discounts on the same item needs Shopify Plus.
Test with real carts, before the freeze:
- A cart just under the free-shipping threshold → add one item → is shipping free at checkout?
- A cart over the gift tier → is the gift in the cart, and does it show $0 at checkout?
- Sitewide sale + a welcome code + free shipping → do all three apply?
- Hero product with a quantity break + a code → is the result what you intended?
- Mobile, logged out, in a second currency if you sell internationally.

Check speed and the mobile cart
- Run a mobile speed test on the home page, one product page and a collection page with your cart app on. Compare it with last month's numbers. If anything dropped noticeably, find out why before the freeze. Test with the app on and off to see whether it, or something else, is the cause.
- On a phone, open the cart with 5 items in it. Can you see the total, the progress bar and the checkout button without scrolling past upsells?
- Remove apps you installed for last year's BFCM and no longer use. Uninstall them properly, and check that leftover theme code went with them.
What to watch during the weekend
Check every few hours on Thursday through Monday:
- Conversion rate and AOV against the same hours last week. A sudden drop in conversion with normal traffic usually means something broke in the cart or checkout.
- Discount errors. Search support emails and chats for "code", "discount" and "free shipping".
- Gift stock. When the gift runs out, take the gift tier off the bar straight away.
- Orders without the expected discount. Spot-check five orders a day.
After Cyber Monday
On December 1, switch off the BFCM threshold and gift tier, or move them to your holiday settings. End the BFCM discounts on a set date rather than by hand. Write down which tier and which bundle actually moved AOV, while you still remember. That's your starting point for next year. To keep this year's new customers buying, see how to retain BFCM customers. For the marketing side of the weekend, our Black Friday and Cyber Monday checklist covers email, ads and site prep.
FAQ
When is Black Friday 2026?
Friday, November 27, 2026. Thanksgiving in the US is Thursday, November 26, and Cyber Monday is November 30.
When should I finish my Shopify Black Friday setup?
Aim to have the cart, discounts and bundles finished and tested by about November 20, a week before Black Friday. That leaves time to fix problems and to run the setup with real traffic before the peak.
Should I change my free shipping threshold for Black Friday?
Often, yes. Discounts lower order values, so a threshold that worked at full price may now be out of reach. Check your median order value at the discounted prices and set the BFCM threshold about one typical item above it.
How many discount codes can a customer use on Shopify?
Up to five product or order discount codes and one shipping discount code per order, and only if each discount is set to combine with the others. A store can have up to 25 active automatic discounts.
Should I use a free gift or a bigger discount on Black Friday?
A gift at a spend threshold usually costs less than a deeper discount, because you pay the product cost rather than a percentage of every order. It also gives shoppers a reason to add one more item instead of just waiting for a lower price.
